Re.medie explores what it would mean for a digital social network to be in rhythm with its immediate surroundings and local community.
The project asks: What if social media were not a continuous feed of never-ending global content?
What if, instead, it reflected local surroundings, local people, and the communities around us?
This diploma project was developed together with Maria Th. W. Grensemo at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) in spring 2026, with Joakim Formo and Einar Sneve Martinussen as supervisors.
To explore these questions, we travelled to Kirkenes, a small town at the northeastern edge of Norway.
Through fieldwork, interviews, and observations, we explored the needs of local communities in relation to digital social platforms.
We also wanted to understand the local culture, history, norms, and ways of life.
This led us to identify five areas of investigation that helped spark the ideation process.
We brought these areas of investigation into the ideation and concept development phase of the project.
Ideation, sketching, and prototyping were carried out in collaboration with local residents and people with strong connections to the area, through workshops, interviews, and user testing.
The result of our process was a series of concept proposals addressing the local need for digital social networks, while responding to the specific context, communities, and environments of the area.
